Simple Steps to Stop Varicose Veins from Getting Worse

AT THE ALABAMA VEIN CENTER, WE ARE ALWAYS HAPPY TO HELP PATIENTS FIND MORE SELF-CONFIDENCE WHEN IT COMES TO THEIR VARICOSE VEINS.

Prevention is always the best solution, however, most of us aren’t thinking about varicose veins until they start to appear.

However, there are many things that you can do at the first sign of varicose veins to stop them from getting worse. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are a few easy steps that we can take to prevent varicose veins from becoming a bigger problem.

One of the first steps is to maintain an active lifestyle. If you are committed to regular exercise, not only will it improve your overall health, but it may also help decrease the prevalence of your varicose veins. Exercise is also a great tool to help you maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight unnecessarily adds pressure to the veins, causing them to become larger and more visible over time.

Shoes and clothing also matter. Limit the amount of time you spend wearing high heels. Shoes that have a lower heel or no heel help you exercise your calf muscles more, which, in turn, helps promote better vein health. Additionally, wearing overly tight clothes, especially around the waist area or calves could restrict blood flow and contribute to varicose veins.

It is also recommended to sit (and stand) in specific ways. When sitting, try to elevate your legs when possible. Avoid sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time. When you change your position frequently, it improves your blood flow, and keeping your legs elevated increases the circulation in your legs.

Hopefully, taking these measures will minimize the appearance of varicose veins. If you do want to discuss further treatment options, we are here to help. Give us a call and a qualified staff member will help answer any questions you may have.
