PRP Therapy Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma (PRP)?

The use of platelet-rich plasma to encourage recovery of damaged tissues of the body is a revolutionary and effective process. PRP therapy utilizes the powerful healing potential of your own blood.

While primarily responsible for blood clotting, platelets also have significant healing properties, by encouraging the production of new cells in and around damaged tissue.

Using a specialized spinning process, platelet-rich plasma is separated from the rest of the blood. When injected into injured tissues, PRP boosts the body’s healing abilities in that site, and helps tissues heal that have not responded well to other treatments.

PRP therapy is used to help improve many conditions, like arthritis, tendon injuries, fractures, and alopecia. It can also be very effective to rejuvenate your skin, making it look younger and healthier.

How can PRP improve the appearance of skin?

PRP contains a number of factors that stimulate new cell growth, increase production of collagen, and rejuvenate tissues. When injected directly into the skin, it can improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Sun damage
  • Discoloration
  • Age spots

This process is best for those who are in good health, and do not have any serious medical conditions. If you’re immune-compromised, this treatment may not be the best for you.

What does a PRP treatment entail?

Initially, you have a consultation, where the team at Alabama Vein & Restoration Medspa evaluates the condition of your skin and discusses the goals you may have.

This simple procedure is done in the office. Your blood is drawn from your arm, and then the PRP is prepared while you wait for about 15 minutes. When the PRP is ready, it is injected directly into the treatment area. From start to finish, this process takes around an hour.

You may have some redness and slight swelling, but this resolves quickly. You’ll see improvements in your skin fairly soon, and there is no recovery or downtime.

Because PRP works with your body’s natural healing process, the results continue to improve for up to three months and last for around a year.
